Biographical Information

Pitcher Cesar Ramos was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 1st round of the 2005 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Brendan Hause and made his pro debut that summer with the Eugene Emeralds, going 0-1 with a 6.53 ERA in 6 games before being promoted to the Fort Wayne Wizards, where he posted a 3-2 record with a 4.19 ERA in 7 starts. He spent the entire 2006 season with the Lake Elsinore Storm and went 7-8 with a 3.70 ERA. Ranked by Baseball America as the 10th best prospect in the Padres organization in 2007, Ramos went 13-9 with a 3.41 ERA for the San Antonio Missions in 2007. He went 9-11 with a 5.29 ERA in 28 games (27 starts) with the Portland Beavers in 2008. Most of 2009 was spent back with Portland, where he improved to 5-6, 3.99 in 15 starts.

Ramos made his major league debut with the Padres after a late-season call-up in 2009. In his first game in the bigs, Cesar was the 8th San Diego pitcher in a game against the Diamondbacks. He entered in the 9th with a 5-3 deficit and gave up a quick single to Justin Upton. He then retired Miguel Montero and struck out Mark Reynolds. Gerardo Parra singled Upton to third, but Ramos got Brandon Allen on a fly to end the threat. San Diego scored twice in the bottom of the 9th to tie it, then Heath Bell relieved Ramos. In five games with the 2009 Padres, he was 0-1 with a 3.07 ERA.

Ramos split 2010 between Portland (6-7, 3.28) and the Padres (0-1, 11.88, 18 H, 11 R in 8 1/3 IP). That winter, he was dealt to the Tampa Bay Rays with Cole Figueroa, Brandon Gomes and Adam Russell in exchange for Jason Bartlett and cash. He was a LOOGY for the 2011 Rays, going 0-1 with a 3.92 ERA in 59 games, walking 23 in 43 2/3 IP. He also was 2-0 in four outings for the Durham Bulls. He began 2012 with Durham and had a 2-1, 1.69 record and one save in his first 12 contests.

Ramos was winless in his first three major league seasons, in spite of making 78 appearances over that span, including 59 games for the Rays in 2011. He put an end to that in his second appearance of the 2012 season for the Rays, on May 14thy, shortly after having been recalled from the AAA Durham Bulls. He relieved Jeff Niemann who had to leave the game after taking a ground ball off the leg in the 1st inning. Ramos pitched 3 innings, giving up a run on 2 hits and 3 walks, and was credited with his team's 7-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

On November 5, 2014, he was traded to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in return for Mark Sappington. He made 65 appearances for the Angels in 2015, all in relief with a record of 2-1 and a 2.71 ERA. On January 5, 2016, he moved to the Texas Rangers on another free agent contract, the interesting development being that the Rangers were planning to convert him back to a starting pitcher. Ramos spent the 2017 season with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the AAA affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. In his final season as a player he pitched to a 5-4 record with a 4.00 ERA in 40 games (11 starts).

Ramos returned to the Phillies as a "Player Information Assistant" in 2020-2021. He became pitching coach of the IronPigs in 2022-2023. In 2024, he was promoted to bullpen coach with the major league team.
