Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder Cole Figueroa began his professional career in 2008. He was signed by scout Rob Sidwell. He is the son of Bien Figueroa.
He was initially drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 9th round of the 2006 amateur draft, a few slots after Brian Bocock and a few before David Freese, but did not sign. He was then taken by the San Diego Padres in the 6th round of the 2008 amateur draft, just after Josh Satin and a few picks ahead of Brett Marshall, and inked a contract.
He played in the Padres system through 2010, which was perhaps the best season of his career to date - that year, he hit .303/.408/.392 with 26 stolen bases, 88 runs scored and 81 walks (to only 54 strikeouts) in 124 games for the Lake Elsinore Storm. On December 10 of that year, he was traded with Brandon Gomes, Cesar Ramos and Adam Russell to the Tampa Bay Rays for Jason Bartlett. He has played in the Rays system since then, playing at Triple-A in 2012 and 2013 before making to the major leagues the following season.
In his debut for the Rays on May 16, 2014, he pinch-hit for Logan Forsythe in the 8th inning of a game against the Los Angeles Angels and flied out to short against Mike Morin. He then stayed in the game to play second base as the Rays won, 3-0. He collected his first hit on May 22nd when he started at second against the Oakland A's and singled off Sonny Gray in the 7th in going 1 for 3. His first big league RBI was a big one: he was called in to pinch hit for Sean Rodriguez on May 23rd in the 9th inning of a scoreless game against the Boston Red Sox; his double off Burke Badenhop scored Desmond Jennings from second base to give the Rays a walk-off 1-0 win.
