Biographical Information

Mike Morin made the majors in 2014.

Morin was drafted out of high school by the Kansas City Royals, in the 40th round of the 2009 amateur draft. As a college freshman, he was 5-3 with a 5.45 ERA and 43 K in 39 2/3 IP. He was 1-3 with a 3.29 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 38 1/3 IP for the Bourne Braves in the Cape Cod League. His sophomore year, he went 4-2 with 10 saves and a 4.64 ERA, fanning 66 in 64 IP; he began the year as a starter then moved to closer. He was 4th in the Atlantic Coast Conference in saves. The Minnesota native was superb in 2012 (6-4, 19 Sv, 1.40 ERA, .98 WHIP). He set an ACC record for saves (3 ahead of #2 Robert Benincasa for 2012); ex-Tar Heel Andrew Carignan had been one of the ACC co-record-holders at 18. Morin tied Michael Wagner and Jimmie Sherfy for second in NCAA Division I in saves, one behind Stefan Lopez. Collegiate Baseball named him first-team All-American while he was a third-team pick by the American Baseball Coaches Association and Baseball America.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim took him in the 13th round of the 2012 amateur draft; the scout was Brandon McArthur. He was 2-2 with four saves and a 4.93 ERA that summer for the Orem Owlz. He tied for 8th in the Pioneer League in games pitched. He was sharper in 2013 with the Inland Empire 66ers (3-1, 13 Sv, 1.85, 43 K, 5 BB in 39 IP) and Arkansas Travelers (0-2, 10 Sv, 2.03, 33 K, 5 BB in 31 IP). He was second in the Angels farm chain in games pitched (two behind Chad Cordero) and led in saves (7 ahead of Kevin Johnson). He was named the Angels Minor League Pitcher of the Year. He was 0-1 with a save and a 2.03 ERA, tying for 7th in the Arizona Fall League with 11 appearances.

Morin opened 2014 with the Travelers (1-0, 3 Sv, 0 R in 5 IP) and quickly moved up to the Salt Lake Bees (0-1, 2 Sv, 5 R in 3 IP) then was promoted to the majors when Michael Roth was designated for assignment. In his major league debut on April 30th, he relieved C.J. Wilson in the 9th with a 7-1 lead over the Cleveland Indians. He allowed a single to Michael Bourn then Mike Aviles hit into a double play. Nick Swisher flew out to end the game.
