Biographical Information

Typically a starter, pitcher Brett Marshall made an unusually long relief appearance in his major league debut.

Marshall was a 6th-round selection by the New York Yankees out of a high school in Baytown, TX in the 2008 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Steve Boros and made his pro debut that summer for the GCL Yankees.

A starter throughout his minor league career, he had started 94 of 96 appearances before making his big league debut. Highlights of his minor league career included putting up a 2.57 ERA in 84 innings while pitching for three teams in 2010, and going 13-7, 3.52 in 27 starts for the Trenton Thunder of the AA Eastern League in 2012. That year he was a mid-season All-Star, the first time he had been singled out as a star since turning professional.

Brett was called up to New York in mid-May of 2013 after OF Brennan Boesch had been optioned to AAA. He had started the year in AAA himself, with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees of the International League and was 2-2, 4.60 after 6 starts. He was thrown into action unexpectedly on May 15th, after starter Philip Hughes could not get out of the 1st inning in a start against the Seattle Mariners at New Yankee Stadium, and reliever Preston Claiborne had pitched another 2 1/3 innings. Coming into the game in the top of the 4th with the Yankees already down 7-1, Marshall was simply given the mission to go as long as he could in order to save the rest of the bullpen in what was already a lost cause. He thus gamely pitched the next five and two-third innings, throwing 108 pitches. He gave up 9 hits, 5 walks and 5 runs during his stint, but his willingness to "take one for the team" was appreciated by his manager, Joe Girardi. He finally ran out of gas in the 9th, when he gave up a pair of hits, got two outs on a double play grounder, but then walked Dustin Ackley. Girardi asked shortstop Alberto Gonzalez to take the mound to get the last out, and he retired Robert Andino on a fly out as the Mariners were unable to tack on any more runs, not that any were needed as they won, 12-2. He went back to AAA after that, but came back to New York in September to make a couple more appearances, finishing with no record and an ERA of 4.50 over 12 innings. With Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he was 7-10, 5.13 in 25 starts.

The Yankees put Marshall on waivers in December of 2013 and he was picked up by the Chicago Cubs. However, they needed his roster spot as spring training opened and waived him again in early February. This time, he ended with the Cincinnati Reds.
