Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Kevin Long was drafted in the 31st round of the 1989 amateur draft by the Kansas City Royals and played in the minors from 1989 to 1996.
After his playing career ended, he was a minor league coach and manager. Long was the hitting coach of the Wilmington Blue Rocks in 1998, Wichita Wranglers from 2000-2001, Omaha Royals from 2002-2003, and Columbus Clippers from 2004 to 2006. In 2007, he became the New York Yankees hitting coach, keeping the position until dismissed following the 2014 season. He then moved across town, taking over as hitting coach of the New York Mets in 2015. After the 2017, he was rumored to be in the running for the job of manager of the Yankees, following the surprise firing of Joe Girardi, but instead he accepted a job as hitting coach of the Washington Nationals in 2018, joining the staff of newly-hired manager Dave Martinez. He stayed until the end of the 2021 season, then became hitting coach of the Philadelphia Phillies in 2022.
His son Jaron Long is a pitcher in the Yankees organization.
