Tyler Moore delivered a pinch single off Marc Rzepczynski with two outs in the 8th, driving in 2 runs, to lead the Washington Nationals to a 3-2 win in Game 1 of the NLDS in St. Louis, the first postseason win in Nationals history.

Attendance: 45,840

Manager Mike Matheny yanked his starter, Jaime Garcia, after only two laborious innings, but St. Louis went on to beat Washington, 12-4, to even the NLDS at one win apiece. Lance Lynn stepped in ably in relief of Garcia while the Cards chased Nats starter Jordan Zimmermann after only 3 innings. Homers by Allen Craig, Daniel Descalso and Carlos Beltran, twice, propelled the winners' offense.

St. Louis ook a 2 games to 1 lead with an 8-0 shutout of Washington in Game 3. Chris Carpenter, who had only pitched 17 innings this season after sustaining an injury in spring training, pitched 5 2/3 innings for the win. Matt Holliday had three hits and Pete Kozma hit a three-run homer off Edwin Jackson to lead the Cards' offense. Jackson was only starting because of the Nationals' controversial decision to shut down ace starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg in early September, as he had reached a pre-set innings limit.

Jayson Werth's walk-off home run off Lance Lynn leading off the bottom of the 9th sent Washington to a 2-1 win over St. Louis in Game 4. The Nats scored once in 7 innings against starter Kyle Lohse, on a 2nd-inning homer by Adam LaRoche, while his opponent Ross Detwiler limited the Cards to an unearned run in 6 innings. Three relievers then followed with a scoreless inning each for Washington, with Drew Storen ending up the winner. In an odd note, the winning and losing pitchers were high school teammates.

The Cardinals moved on to the NLCS with another dramatic comeback, pulling out a 9-7 win over the Nationals in Game 5 of the NLDS, after trailing by 6 runs. With St. Louis trailing, 7-5, in the top of the 9th, Carlos Beltran hit a lead-off double, but Drew Storen retired the next two batters; however, Yadier Molina and David Freese both drew walks on full counts and Daniel Descalso hit a shot just off the glove of SS Ian Desmond to tie the game. Pete Kozma followed with a single to score two more runs. Jason Motte then pitched a scoreless bottom of the 9th to give St. Louis another stunning postseason win.
