Overview[edit]

The Philadelphia Phillies were heavy favorites heading into the National League Division Series for the 5th consecutive season against the wild card St. Louis Cardinals. The Phillies had posted the best record in the major leagues during the regular season, and with 102 wins, the highest total in franchise history, while the Cardinals has barely squeaked through to the postseason, catching and passing the Atlanta Braves on the last day of the season after being seemingly out of the race in early September. Yet, the Cardinals managed to upset the Phillies in five games to reach the National League Championship Series.
