In Game 1 of the NLDS, the Cincinnati Reds lost ace starter Johnny Cueto to back spasms after only two batters, but still managed to beat the San Francisco Giants, 5-2. Brandon Phillips had 3 RBI on 3 hits, including a homer, and Jay Bruce homered as well, while Sam LeCure and Mat Latos, the latter making the first relief appearance of his career, stepped in ably in relief of Cueto. For the Giants, Buster Posey hit a solo homer off Latos, but it was not enough.

Bronson Arroyo allowed a single hit over 7 innings to lead the Reds to a 9-0 win over San Francisco in Game 2. Arroyo retired the first 14 batters of the game until Brandon Belt singled with two outs in the 5th. For the Reds, Ryan Ludwick led off the game with a homer off Madison Bumgarner, then Cincinnati added three runs in the 4th to run away with the game.

Attendance: 44,501

The Reds couldn't finish off the Giants in Game 3, allowing a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly in the 3rd and a passed ball and error in the 10th inning to lose, 2 - 1. The loss negated a great effort by P Homer Bailey, who allowed one hit over 7 innings and struck out 10. San Francisco got only three hits all night. Ryan Vogelsong gave up a 1st-inning run for the Giants, but then settled down, and the bullpen was airtight as well, allowing San Francisco to hold on until they won the game in extra frames.

The Giants forced a fifth game with an 8-3 win over Cincinnati in Game 4. Having collected only 12 hits over the first three games of the Series, they banged out 11 today, including 8 for extra bases as they pounded the Reds into submission. Tim Lincecum was the winner in relief of an ineffective Barry Zito, besting Mike Leake, who was activated before the game to replace injured ace Johnny Cueto. Angel Pagan, Gregor Blanco and Pablo Sandoval all homered for San Francisco.

The Giants completed a tremendous comeback by defeating the Reds, 6-4, in Game 5, completing a three-game sweep in Cincinnati after losing the first two games at home. A 5th-inning grand slam by Buster Posey off Mat Latos was the key blow, capping a six-run outburst.
