2006 World University Championship
The 2006 World University Championship was the third World University Championship. It was held at Cuba's Estadio Latinoamericano from August 6 to August 16, 2006.
The United States defended its title from 2004, routing Taiwan 18-9 in the finale and going 8-0 in the event. J.P. Arencibia won MVP honors after hitting .412 with 4 homers and23 RBI. Nick Schmidt won the finale. Other players included Pedro Alvarez, Julio Borbon, Jemile Weeks, Roger Kieschnick, Darwin Barney Sean Doolittle, Tim Federowicz, Zach Cozart, Todd Frazier, Tommy Hunter, Andrew Brackman, David Price, Jake Arrieta, Cole St. Clair, Danny Moskos, Ross Detwiler, Nick Hill and Casey Weathers. They were managed by Tim Corbin.
Taiwan finished second, managed by Jung-Tang Kang. Players included Sheng-Wei Wang, Chun-Yu Kuo, Kun-Han Lin, Han Lin, Chia-Chun Tang, Ko-Chien Lin, Chih-Yao Chan, Fu-Jen Shen, Keng-Wei Lin, Ching-Ming Wang, Hsien-Hsien Yang, Hung-Yu Lin, Chia-Wei Lin, Chen-Yu Chung and Chih-Hsiang Lin.
Cuba placed third, upset by Taiwan 2-1 in the semifinals. Japan was 4th, with a team including Takayuki Kishi, Kohei Hasebe, Takayoshi Kawabata and Norihito Kaneto. Italy (with Riccardo Bertagnon and Joe Mazzuca) was 5th, Puerto Rico 6th, Mexico 7th, Nicaragua 8th, the US Virgin Islands 9th, Czech Republic 10th and Bahamas 11th.
