Pitcher Nick Schmidt was selected by the San Diego Padres in the first round of the 2007 amateur draft.
Schmidt had a fine freshman year, going 7-2 with a 2.80 ERA in 2005 and joining Wes Roemer and David Price on the Baseball America Freshman All-American second team. He was 7th in the Southeastern Conference in ERA, .06 ahead of Price. J.P. Arencibia was the SEC Freshman of the Year. In 2006, Nick was 2-1 with a 1.53 ERA for the USA college team. In the college season, he had gone 9-3 with a 3.01 ERA for Arkansas. He was 5th in the SEC in ERA and second to Price in strikeouts. He joined Wade LeBlanc as the starters on the All-Conference team, as Price was left off. Schmidt won the SEC Pitcher of the Year award. Collegiate Baseball named him a first-team All-American while Baseball America chose him as a second-team All-American. Schmidt was 7th in NCAA Division I in strikeouts. In 2007, Nick was 11-3 with a 2.69 ERA and .196 opponent average, though he hit 24 batters.
The San Diego Padres selected Schmidt 23rd in the 2007 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Lane Decker and made his pro debut that season with the Fort Wayne Wizards. He allowed five baserunners and one run in two innings against the Clinton Lumber Kings in his July 18 debut.
