1974-1975 Cuban National League

From BR Bullpen

(Redirected from 1975 Cuban Serie Nacional)

The 1974-1975 season was the fourteenth season of Cuba's national baseball system.

Serie Nacional[edit]

The 14th Serie Nacional was won by Agricultores, who were managed by Orlando Leroux. The Havana-based teams championship coincides with a halving of the length of the Serie Nacional season from 78 games to 39 games. This change was made to allow for the playing of the 54-game Special Series, and first Series Selectivas in the spring and summer.

The champions are led by pitcher Walfrido Ruiz, who wins nine games to lead the league and loses none, and whose 0.62 ERA is a league leader as well. He is also named MVP and best pitcher. Santiago "Changa" Mederos records his 1000th strikeout on March 8 at Estadio Latinoamericano – his opposing pitcher on that day was Ruiz.

Fermín Laffita of Cafetaleros set a new record for batting average, breaking Erwin Walters's record from the league's first season. He hits .396 over the season with 55 hits in 139 at-bats.

Juan Pérez Pérez throws a 2 – 0 no-hitter on January 19 for Ganaderos against Citricultores at Estadio Cándido González. It is Pérez's third consecutive season with a no-hitter.

José Antonio Huelga, Cuba's star pitcher in the 1970 World Cup, is killed in a July 4th automobile accident. Huelga was still in the midst of his seventh season at the time of his death. His career line includes a 73-32 win-loss record, 1.50 ERA, and 722 strikeouts.
