Biographical Information

Manuel Álvarez was a pitcher for 14 seasons in Cuba. Though an accomplished hurler, he never made the Cuban national team.

Álvarez led the 1975 Special Series in strikeouts (84) and tied José Brizuela for the win lead (8) on a sub-.500 Granjeros club. On May 16, 1977, he was the hurler when Armando Capiró became the first Cuban player of the Fidel Castro era to hit 100 career home runs. Manuel starred for Ciego de Ávila in the 1983-1984 Serie Nacional, with a league-leading 1.17 ERA. José Sánchez beat him for pitcher of the year honors. He won his second ERA title with the Camagüeyanos of the 1985 Series Selectivas, at 1.98.

Overall, Álvarez was 68-100 with 18 saves and a 2.84 ERA in 283 games in Cuba.
