Shortly after the tragic death of Jose Fernandez in a boating accident in 2016, the Florida Marlins announced that they would retire uniform number 16 in his honor. However, the team never made good on its promise, possibly because the autopsy report that followed indicated that there were drugs in the young pitcher's system at the time of the crash and that he was the pilot. No player on the team has worn the number since then, however.
