Biographical Information

Wes Darvill has played as high as AAA and has been on the Canadian national team.

Darvill was taken by the Chicago Cubs in the 5th round of the 2009 amateur draft, the third position player they chose after Brett Jackson and DJ LeMahieu. Al Geddes was the scout. He hit .223/.295/.231 as a backup middle infielder for the AZL Cubs that summer, stealing seven bases in eight tries. In 2010, he was with the AZL Cubs (.301/.387/.330 in 26 G) and Boise Hawks (.143/.257/.154), stealing 15 bases while only being caught three times. He fielded .930 at short between the two teams.

Back with Boise in '11, he posted a .256/.346/.318 batting line and fielded .943 at shortstop. He made it to full-season ball with the 2012 Peoria Chiefs, playing regularly while being used at third, short and second most of the time. He hit only .224/.285/.306 and was 11-for-17 in steals. He did leg out six triples. He was mostly used at second by the 2013 Daytona Cubs (.253/.324/.365 in 79 G) and also played with the Kane County Cougars (.347/.429/.469 in 15 G). His base-stealing continued to fall as he was now caught more (10) than successful (8). He hit .171/.237/.286 for the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League.

In 2014, he was with Daytona (.257/.308/.345 in 60 G) and the Tennessee Smokies (.231/.288/.306 in 39 G). The utility man showed his speed better, going 8-for-10 in swipes. In '15, he hit .173/.253/.225 in 69 games for the Smokies and .220/.313/.373 in 20 for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, playing every position except catcher and center field. He pitched one shutout inning.

He signed with the independent Winnipeg Goldeyes for 2016 and produced at a .262/.345/.362 clip with six triples and an impressive 18-for-18 in steal attempts, fielding .958 at the hot corner to boot. With the same team in '17, he batted .309/.354/.402 and stole 30 bases in 33 tries. He tied Maikol Gonzalez and Andrew Sohn for 7th in the American Association in steals. Winnipeg defended its AA title and Darvill made the league All-Star team at third base.

That earned him another look at the affiliated minors. The Los Angeles Dodgers signed him and he split the summer of 2018 between the Tulsa Drillers (.203/.261/.277 in 49 G), Oklahoma City Dodgers (1 for 10) and AZL Dodgers (1 for 10, BB). He played for Canada in the 2019 Pan American Games Qualifier, hitting .231/.389/.538 with five runs in four games; he homered in their win over Panama and tied Elmer Reyes for 3rd in the tournament with 15 assists as Canada won a spot in the 2019 Pan American Games.

He spent most of the summer with Winnipeg, batting .317/.379/.449 with 26 steals in 28 tries and 66 runs in 88 games. He fielded .990 at short and .968 at third. He was second in the AA in steals, one behind Kyle Wren. He was also 8th in average (between Brady Shoemaker and Dylan Tice). He did not make the All-Star team; Nate Samson was picked at SS and Chase Simpson at 3B. He missed some time playing in the Pan Am Games. He excelled, hitting .333/.379/.481 with 8 runs and 8 RBI in 6 games, stealing 5 bases without being caught and handling 31 chances error-free. He had 3 hits and 3 runs in a big win over Cuba and hit a grand slam off Colombia's Dewin Pérez. He was 0 for 4 with a run in the Gold Medal Game loss to Puerto Rico as Canada still got Silver. He tied Jordan Lennerton for the Games lead in RBI, led in runs (one ahead of Tristan Pompey) and easily led in steals (Brahiam Maldonado and Michael Crouse tied for 2nd at two). He led shortstops in fielding; Yordan Manduley was also at 1.000 but in 16 chances.

Darvill then was with Canada for a third time that year, for the 2019 Premier 12.
