Team History[edit]
In 1989 the Maine Phillies of the International League were replaced by the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons. The team was so popular in its debut season that it competed against itself on television: one local channel aired the team's weekly show at the same time another would broadcast a live game. The Red Barons were a Philadelphia Phillies farm club until they became affiliated with the New York Yankees following the 2006 season and changed their name to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees.
The Red Barons and Lackawanna County Stadium were the host of the 1995 AAA All-Star Game which featured Derek Jeter, Jason Isringhausen, and Jeromy Burnitz.
Some of the notable alumni to play for the Red Barons are Scott Rolen, Cole Hamels, Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Shane Victorino, Jimmy Rollins, Pat Burrell and Carlos Ruiz- many of whom were key members of the 2008 World Series-winning Phillies squad.
