Biographical Information[edit]

Don Long became hitting coach of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2008 after 25 years in minor league baseball as a player, coach and manager.

An infielder, he was drafted by the Cleveland Indians out of high school, the Cincinnati Reds and Houston Astros out of junior college and finally the San Francisco Giants in the 3rd round of the 1983 amateur draft. He played three seasons in the Giants chain before retiring.

Long had won Bronze with Team USA in the 1982 Amateur World Series.

Long was a coach for Seattle University and the Everett Giants in 1986 and hitting coach for the Quad City Angels in 1987. He began managing with the Bend Bucks in 1988 and remained a manager in the Angels minor league system through 1998.

Long was a minor league hitting instructor for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1999 and was the Phillies' minor league hitting coordinator from 2000 to 2007. After his three year stint with the Pirates, he was the minor league hitting coordinator for the Atlanta Braves in 2012-2013. Long returned to the big leagues as hitting coach for the Cincinnati Reds in 2014. He stayed until the end of the 2018 season, then moved to the Baltimore Orioles in the same role from 2019 to 2021.
