Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, CA, is the home of the Sacramento River Cats, the San Francisco Giants' Triple-A Pacific Coast League farm team. It was also the Giants' 2020 Coronavirus pandemic alternate training site.
Opened as Raley Field in 2000, the privately financed ballpark ended the PCL's last foray into Vancouver, BC. Art Savage, the former chief executive of the NHL's San Jose Sharks, put together the stadium project and filled it by buying and moving the Vancouver Canadians south. The original 20-year naming-rights contract with Raley's Supermarkets reportedly provided $15 million, about a third of the facility's construction cost. It went up remarkably quickly for a Triple-A park, with groundbreaking on October 28, 1999, and - despite an unusually rainy winter - the first Cats game on May 15, 2000.
Sutter Health bought naming rights in time for the 2020 season, which of course was lost to the pandemic.
The brick-and-concrete stadium lies across the Sacramento River from the State Capitol in Sacramento proper, connected by the golden Tower Bridge - which dominates the view beyond right field. The 1935 vertical-lift structure, the first in the California highway system, was originally silver. It was repainted to match the capitol dome in 1976, then changed to its present gold in 2002 - the River Cats' third season. The bridge was nominated to the National Register of Historic Places in January 1982[1] and entered later that year.
The ballpark replaced a cluster of West Sacramento warehouses and railyards, and most of the area has since been redeveloped into a bustling urban mixed-use district. The Sacramento Kings, who effectively took over the club from the Savage family in 2022, are reportedly interested in developing land the team owns immediately around the stadium.[2]
The Oakland A's eached an agreement to play at Sutter Health Park from 2025 to 2027 with an option for 2028, while waiting for a new ballpark to built in Las Vegas, NV. The team will reportedly by called the Athletics or A's with no city name attached while playing in Sacramento. [3]
