Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Ben Brown was born on 9/9/99. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 33rd round of the 2017 amateur draft but it was with the Chicago Cubs that he made his major league debut a couple of days into the 2024 season, pitching in relief in an 11-2 loss to the Texas Rangers. His maiden outing did not go particularly well as in 1 2/3 inning, he gave up 6 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks, including a two-run homer by Josh Jung. He had moved from the Phillies to the Cubbies on August 2, 2022 in return for major league reliever David Robertson. He was named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Year that season after going 3-5, 3.08 with 105 strikeouts in 73 innings for the Jersey Shore BlueClaws that season.
Brown began to pitch better after his rough big league debut. In his first big league start against the San Diego Padres on April 9th, he did not give up a run in 4 2/3 innings, and only one run in 6 innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks on April 15th. In spite of those two solid outings as a starter, he went back to the bullpen for a spell, then was roughed in an April 27th start against the Boston Red Sox, with 3 runs on 7 hits in 3 233 innings in what turned into a 17-0 debacle after he was removed from the game. His first career win came in relief against the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 10th as he continued to alternate between long relief and occasional starts. He made a strong bid to be a full-time starter on May 28th when he pitched seven hitless innings against the Milwaukee Brewers, striking out 10. He was helped by CF Cody Bellinger who robbed Willie Adames of a potential home run by snatching a ball above the fence in the 7th inning. Reliever Hayden Wesneski then allowed a single to Sal Frelick with one out in the 8th to break up the no-hit bid, and the Brewers managed to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the 9th, depriving him of the win, even if the Cubs scored five times in the 10th to eventually come out on top, 6-3.
