Biographical Information

Jermaine Curtis made his major league debut in 2013.

Amateur Career

One of seven children in his family, Curtis hit .495 as a high school senior and was named league MVP. As a college freshman, he hit .336/.457/.473 and was 4th in the Pac-10 Conference in OBP. He batted .269 with 6 homers and 31 RBI in summer ball for the Alexandria Beetles of the Northwoods League. The sophomore hit .312/.412/.461 in 2007 but missed 24 games due to NCAA academic ineligibility. In the Cape Cod League, he produced at a .295/.401/.451 clip with 20 walks as the main third baseman for the Chatham A's. As a junior and co-captain, he hit .306/.426/.426 with 45 runs in 60 games. His 42 walks were the most by a UCLA player since Troy Glaus in 1997. He tied Jason Castro for third in the Pac-10 with 18 doubles and was 6th in walks. The St. Louis Cardinals took him in the 5th round of the 2008 amateur draft. He was the third collegiate position player taken by the Cards that year, following Brett Wallace and Shane Peterson.

Minor Leagues

Curtis hit .305/.383/.439 for the 2008 Batavia Muckdogs; had he qualified, he would have made the New York-Penn League top 10 in average. He was picked for the 2008 New York-Penn League All-Star Game but did not play. In 2009, he saw action for the Quad Cities River Bandits (.304/.426/.438, 12 SB, 2 CS in 30 G) and Palm Beach Cardinals (.197/.301/.229, 14 HBP in 90 G). He was 9th in the Cards chain with 19 steals and was third in times plunked (19). He was also 9th in the Florida State League in hit-by-pitch. He split 2010 between Palm Beach (.267/.390/.319 in 56 G) and the Springfield Cardinals (.236/.344/.291 in 23 G).

Used as a utility man by Springfield in 2011, he did very well (.315/.414/.435 in 91 G), backing up at 2B, 3B, RF and LF. He even pitched two games, with 1 2/3 shutout innings. He started at third base for Springfield in 2012 and hit .313/.416/.378 with 61 runs in 96 games. He also played 17 games for the Memphis Redbirds (8 for 29, 2B, 9 BB). He tied for 6th in the Cardinals chain in average, was 9th in runs (68), 8th in hits (123), tied for 5th in walks (56, even with Xavier Scruggs) and was second in OBP (behind Mike O'Neill). He led the Texas League in OBP by .002 over Conner Crumbliss, was second in average (8 points shy of Oscar Taveras) and tied Jared Prince for the most times hit by pitch (19). Mike Olt beat him out for All-Star honors at 3B. He started 2013 with Memphis and his batting line was at .292/.386/.458 after 17 games. He was then called up the majors when Matt Adams went on the DL.

Majors

In his first game in The Show on April 27, 2013, Curtis pinch-hit for Matt Carpenter in the 9th with one on, one out and a 5-2 deficit against the Pittsburgh Pirates and closer Jason Grilli. Jermaine struck out swinging on a 2-2 count.
