Biographical Information[edit]

First baseman Xavier Scruggs began playing in the St. Louis Cardinals minor league system in 2008 and made his major league debut in 2014.

Originally, Scruggs was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 50th round of the 2005 amateur draft, but did not sign. He inked a contract after the Cardinals took him in the 19th round of the 2008 amateur draft after an excellent year at UNLV, where he hit .379/.480/.749 with 20 home runs and 65 RBI in 59 games.

The slugger hit 20 or more home runs each year from 2010 to 2013, with at least 63 RBI per campaign. In 2012, he had a career-high 91 RBI for the Springfield Cardinals and in 2013, also with Springfield, he hit 29 home runs, also a career high. He began 2014 with the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds, his first taste of Triple-A and made his big league debut that September.

Scruggs was announcer for ESPN for the Stanford Regional in the 2021 College World Series Regionals the Stanford Regional and Stanford Super Regional of the 2022 College World Series, and the Eugene Super Regional of the 2023 College World Series.
