Biographical Information[edit]

Heitor Tokar has pitched in the minors and for the Brazilian national team.

Tokar was signed by Houston Astros scouts Oz Ocampo and Thiago De Souza in 2017. [1] He was 0-1 with a 1.66 ERA and .76 WHIP in his pro debut with the 2018 DSL Astros. He pitched once for Brazil in the 2019 Pan American Games Qualifier, relieving Leonardo Oliveira late in a loss to Mexico. He allowed four hits and three runs (three earned) in 1 1/3 IP before Igor Januário succeeded him. [2] He was 1-0 with two saves and a 2.83 ERA for the GCL Astros.

He was on Brazil's roster for the 2020 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers before that was one of the first baseball events to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [3] The pandemic also wiped out the minor league season. He returned to action in 2021, appearing for the FCL Astros (2-1, 3.86, 18 K in 14 IP) and Fayetteville Woodpeckers (3-3, 2 Sv, 4.73, 8 BB in 40 IP). He had a rough '22 with the Asheville Tourists at 3-4, 8.02 in 20 games, with a .313 opponent average.

Playing for Brazil in the 2022 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, he pitched in two of their four game (only Oscar Nakaoshi made more appearances for the team). In their opener, he relieved Gabriel Barbosa in the 3rd with a 4-3 lead, two outs and Nikau Pouaka-Grego on first. Pouaka-Grego stole then Tokar got Sam Kennelly swinging to end the threat. He went 1-2-3 in the 4th, allowed singles to Daniel Lamb-Hunt and Jason Matthews in the 5th before getting Chayton Krauss to hit into a double play and went 1-2-3 in the 6th (fanning Pouaka-Grego and Kris Richards). Nakaoshi succeeded him in the 7th. He started their finale against Nicaragua with a spot in the 2023 World Baseball Classic at stake. He ran into trouble right away, as Steven Leytón opened with a single. Milkar Pérez struck out but Cheslor Cuthbert doubled and 2B Elmer Reyes grounded in Leytón. Dwight Britton doubled in Cuthbert and Melvin Novoa was intentionally walked. Sandy Bermudez popped up to end the inning. In the 2nd, he walked Isaac Benard, struck out Luis Montealto, allowed a Leytón single, struck out Pérez again and hit Cuthbert to load the bases. Barbosa took over and settled things down, but Tokar wound up with the loss as Osman Gutiérrez was turning in a gem for Nicaragua to eliminate Brazil. He led Brazil's staff with 8 Ks, two more than Felipe Sales, and was third in the qualifiers behind Ronald Medrano and Yeudy García. [4]
