Biographical Information

Dustin Delucchi played 7 minor league seasons, hitting .294; about half of his career was in the independent leagues.

Delucchi hit .343/.431/.468 his last year of college and led the West Coast Conference with 22 doubles. Undrafted, he signed with the Evansville Otters in 2000 and batted .307/.362/.360 with 11 steals in 12 tries. In 2001, he played for the Dubois County Dragons (.331/.465/.475, 22 SB, 3 CS in 66 G), Winnipeg Goldeyes (3 for 15, 2B) and Lincoln Saltdogs (0 for 1). He was 8th in the Frontier League in batting average.

In 2002, Dustin batted .325/.442/.447 with 28 doubles and 79 runs in 89 games for Lincoln. He swiped 41 bags while only being thrown out six times. He tied Brian Becker for sixth in the Northern League's Central Division in average and made the league All-Star outfield alongside Harry Berrios and Bryan Warner. Delucchi led the division in steals and was third in runs, 4 behind co-leaders Berrios and Brent Sachs.

That kind of performance earned the interest of MLB clubs. The Seattle Mariners signed Delucchi for the 2003 campaign. They farmed him out to their Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (.266/.393/.371 in 43 G) and Inland Empire 66ers (.327/.401/.449 in 77 G, 61 R, 15 SB, 2 CS) clubs. Had he qualified, he would have been third in the California League in average. Hitting leadoff for Inland Empire, he helped spark them to the Cal League title with a late-season surge.

The California native spent all of 2004 with the AA San Antonio Missions, hitting .272/.375/.352 with 71 walks and 82 runs but only 23 steals in 38 tries, an uncharacteristically poor success rate. He led the Texas League in times caught stealing.

Dustin started 2005 with Seattle's Tacoma Rainiers AAA club but hit only .244/.315/.293 in 23 games. Released by the Mariners, he was picked up by the San Diego Padres. He split the remainder of '05 between the Mobile BayBears (.280/.394/.327 in 34 G) and Portland Beavers (.305/.440/.442, 49 R in 64 G).

Delucchi made the Italian national team for the 2006 World Baseball Classic. He was 2 for 10 with two runs as a starting outfielder for the Azzurri. In the summer of '06, Dustin struggled with both Mobile (.244/.353/.275 in 53 G) and Portland (.216/.310/.270, 1 R in 14 G), earning him his release from the Padre chain. He signed with the independent Sioux Falls Canaries and hit .284/.404/.326 in 25 contests to finish the season and his career.
