Dick Howser Trophy
The Dick Howser Trophy is an award given annually to the collegiate player of the year. The award was created in 1987 and is sponsored by the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce and the National College Baseball Writers Association. The award is named after Dick Howser, a former Major League player and manager, who died of cancer in June of that year. American Baseball Coaches Association selected the winners from 1987 to 1998. In 1999, the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) became the award's selectors, discontinuing their NCBWA Player of Year Award.
