Biographical Information[edit]

Chin-Li Wang was a 3-time All-Star in the CPBL.

Wang was signed by the Brother Elephants in 1999 with a 1 million NT dollars signing bonus, and he had a 2.70 ERA in 13 games in his rookie year. Wang had a 3.96 ERA in 21 games in 2000, then he broke out in 2001. He entered the rotation, and he was named the starter of the 2001 CPBL All-Star Game; he pitched 4 shutout innings. Wang ended up 10-10 with a 4.35 ERA in 2001, ranking 6th in wins (8 behind John Burgos) and 10th in strikeouts (70 behind Tetsu Yofu). In the 2001 Taiwan Series, Wang started in Game 1 but he allowed 4 runs in 4 1/3 innings and got the loss. He then relieved Hajime Saito in the 8th inning of Game 4, and he allowed 2 runs in 3 1/3 innings. He got the loss again because of Min-Ching Lo's game-winning RBI single in the 11th inning. He surrendered 5 runs in 3 2/3 innings as the starter in Game 6, then allowed 2 runs in 1/3 of a inning in Game 7. he ended up with a no-decision in both of the games, and he won his first Taiwan Series title as the Brothers beat the Uni-President Lions in 7 games.

The Taipei native was still solid in 2002, having a 11-6 record with a 4.32 ERA in 25 starts. He was 7th in wins (5 behind Chao-Chi Sung) and 10th in strikeouts (107 behind Sung). Wang also attended the 2002 CPBL All-Star Game, but he allowed 3 runs in 2 innings this time. In the 2002 Taiwan Series, Wang started in Game 3, and he outdueled Hiroaki Nakayama as he pitched 6 innings with 3 earned runs allowed. The Brothers swept the Chinatrust Whales, and Wang won his second title.

After the 2002 season, the Brothers decided to turned Wang into a reliever, and he had a 3.52 ERA in 48 appearances in 2003. He notched 11 saves, and he was 3rd in saves (12 behind Ramon Morel). He allowed a run in 2 innings in the 2003 Taiwan Series Game 1, then he pitched 6 1/3 shutout innings in 3 games combined in the rest of the series while collecting a save in Game 4. The Brothers beat the Sinon Bulls in 6 games. Wang were selected into the 2004 CPBL All-Star Game, and he pitched a shutout inning. He ended up notching 14 saves with a 2.85 ERA in 54 games, ranking 2nd in appearances (3 behind Ming-Chin Lee) and 3rd in saves (12 behind Mike Garcia).

Wang slumped to a 4.50 ERA in 17 games in 2005, then he had a 3.18 ERA in 24 games in 2006. He notched a league-leading 12 holds in 2007, and his ERA was 3.30 in 45 games. However, he slumped to a 9.39 ERA in 10 games in 2008, and he played 41 games with a 5.88 ERA in 2009. Wang pitched a shutout inning in 2009 Taiwan Series Game 4, and the Brothers were beaten by the Uni-President Lions in 7 games. He was then involved in a game-fixing scandal, and the league banned him for life.

Wang's repertoire included a fastball (peak 91.3 mph), curveball, slider and forkball.

Overall, Wang was 41-43 with a 4.05 ERA, collected 22 holds and 36 saves in 331 appearances, struck out 478 and pitched 747 1/3 innings in 11 seasons in the CPBL.
