The Atlantic Coast Conference was formed May 8, 1953 with seven charter members -- Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest. The seven institutions withdrew from the Southern Conference.

Virginia was admitted December 4, 1953. South Carolina withdrew June 30, 1971. Georgia Tech was admitted April 3, 1978, Florida State in July 1, 1991. Miami and Virginia Tech were added in July 1, 2004, and Boston College in July 1, 2005.

On September 18, 2011 it was announced that the University of Pittsburgh and Syracuse University had been admitted to the conference from the Big East Conference [1]. It was also reported that the University of Connecticut showed strong interest in making the same switch [2]. On September 12, 2012, the University of Notre Dame agreed to join the ACC in all sports except football and hockey. On March 12, 2013, Notre Dame and the Big East announced they had reached a settlement allowing University of Notre Dame to join the ACC effective July 1, 2013. The University of Maryland voted in November to join the Big 10 Conference. November 28 the ACC voted to admit the University of Louisville to replace Maryland for the 2014/15 season. In the aftermath of the mass exodus of schools from the Pacific-12 Conference in 2023, the ACC invited University of California and Stanford University, along with non-baseball school Southern Methodist University from the American Athletic Conference to join in the 2024-2025 school year.
