2021 Taiwan Series

The 2021 Taiwan Series featured the Chinatrust Brothers against the Uni-President Lions in a rematch from the 2020 Taiwan Series. The Brothers pulled off the first Taiwan Series sweep since the Lions had done it in 2013. It was the latest Series to date, due to delays in the CPBL calendar due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Lions were 32-26-2 to finish second in the first half of the 2021 CPBL but 32-25-3 to win the second half. They were managed by Yueh-Ping Lin. RF An-Ko Lin (.302/.395/.473) was second in the league with 16 homers and also stole 17 bases, while CF Chieh-Hsien Chen was second in average (.325/.399/.411) and third in steals (22). Brock Dykxhoorn (17-4, 1.83) led the league in wins and was second in ERA and strikeouts (157), while Rui-Yang Ku Lin was 8-6 with a 3.15 ERA and 106 K in 100 IP. Yun-Wen Chen (1-3, 32 Sv, 1.53) led the league in saves, while Cheng-Yu Wu (1-1, 2.09) and Hsuan-Ta Liu (2-3, 2.77) also provided fine relief.

Chinatrust Brothers[edit]

The Brothers were first in the first half (35-24-1) as in 2020, and again came close to a second-half title as well (31-25-4). José De Paula paced the league in ERA (1.77) and strikeouts (187) while finishing second in wins (16-4), far ahead of their next starter, Gabriel Ynoa (3-3, 4.01). C.C. Lee (5-1, 24 Sv, 2.42) was their ace closer while Chi-Che Tsai went 7-2 with a 2.45 ERA in 56 outings. Their top offensive contributors were 1B Chi-Hung Hsu (.290/.368/.468, 38 2B) and RF Tzu-Hao Chen (.276/.388/.448).

De Paula pitched eight shutout innings (6 H, 2 BB, 5 K) and C.C. Lee allowed a walk in a scoreless ninth to complete the whitewash in the opener (attended by 20,000, the largest CPBL crowd since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic). Dykxhoorn matched De Paula with goose eggs for six eggs before allowing a homer to LF Tzu-Hsien Chan followed by another solo shot by 2B Tung-Hua Yueh for all the game's scoring.

DH Ssu-Chi Chou hit a three-run homer off Lisalverto Bonilla in the first and 1B Chi-Hung Hsu added another three-run dinger in the second while Yen-Ching Lu allows one run in five for the victory, scattering eight hits.

RF Tzu-Hao Chen hits a 3-run homer against Hsuan-Tu Liu in the 7th to break a 2-2 deadlock. C.C. Lee saves it for Kai-Wen Cheng.

Jose Valdez allowed only two hits in eight innings and De Paula wrapped up the shutout. RF Tzu-Hao Chen's first-inning sacrifice fly off former major leaguer Chih-Wei Hu scored 3B Wei-Chen Wang with the winning run.

Tzu-Hsien Chan was named Taiwan Series MVP after hitting .417.
