He was taken by the Cincinnati Reds in the 20th round of the 2012 amateur draft but opted to go on to junior college. The Houston Astros chose him in the sixth round of the 2014 amateur draft. The scout was Mark Ross.

With the Greeneville Astros in his pro debut, he was 3-3 with a 4.31 ERA, striking out 36 and walking only eight in 31 1/3 IP. The giant right-hander opened 2015 strong with the Quad Cities River Bandits then was a late addition to Team Canada for the 2015 Pan American Games. He allowed one run and three hits in two innings, fanning three. He tossed a shutout inning against Nicaragua and allowed a ninth-inning run to Puerto Rico in another Canadian win. Canada got the Gold, their second in baseball at the Pan American Games. Only Cuba had multiple Pan Am baseball Golds before that.
