Biographical Information[edit]
Mark Ross went 1-0 with a save and a 1.80 ERA for Team USA in the 1978 Amateur World Series. The USA won Silver that year. Ross tied four other hurlers for the Series lead in saves. He later became a Houston Astros scout, signing Brock Dykxhoorn, Mitch Einertson, Jon Gaston and T.J. Steele.
He pitched in the major leagues in six different seasons, but never as many as 10 games as a prototypical AAAA player. His career totals are 27 games, all in relief, and 42 1/3 innings. Still, he did not pitch badly, with an ERA of 3.83 and a 2-2 record with 1 save during this time. In 1987, he made only one major league appearance with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but it was a memorable one, as pitching the final inning of a 10-7 loss to the Montreal Expos on August 16th, he gave up one run in his lone inning of work. That run came on a solo homer by Tim Raines, who thus hit for the cycle for the only time of his illustrious career.
Ross was a coach for the Greenville Braves in 1992, Idaho Falls Braves in 1993-1994, and Macon Braves in 1996-1998.
