Biographical Information[edit]
Hsuan-Ta Liu has pitched in the CPBL.
Liu was drafted by the CTBC Brothers in the 11th round of the 2015 CPBL Draft, but he refused to sign. He then represented Taiwan in the 2018 World University Championship, allowing one run in six to beat South Korea but giving up 2 runs in 2/3 IP in his other outing. [1] The Uni-President Lions then drafted him in the third round of the 2018 CPBL Draft.[2] Liu stayed in the minor league in his rookie year, and he only pitched 3 games with the big club in 2018. He joined the bullpen in 2019, and he had a 4.61 ERA in 50 appearances while notching 13 holds. He ranked 7th in appearances (15 behind Kai-Wen Cheng) and 5th in holds (10 behind Tzu-Peng Huang). He was also selected into the 2019 CPBL All-Star Game, and he relieved Sheng-Feng Wu in the 7th inning. Liu struck out Tzu-Chieh Lin, but gave up a double to Cheng-Tang Wang and a single to Yung-Chi Chen. He forced Chin-Lung Hu to hit a grounder, but 3rd baseman Li Lin made an error while catching the ball, so he could only nab Hu at first. Cheng-Min Peng then added a two-run shot, and Liu struck out Chi-Hung Hsu to end his work; Yi-Hao Lin relieved him.
The Chiayi native struggled in 2020 as his ERA rose to 5.75 in 45 games. He pitched a shutout inning against the CTBC Brothers in 2020 Taiwan Series Game 2, then allowed a run in 2/3 of an inning in Game 4 due to Tzu-Hsien Chan's homer. The Lions beat the Brothers in 7 games, and Liu won his first Taiwan Series title. He bounced back and notched 10 holds with a 2.77 ERA in 42 games in 2021. In the 2021 Taiwan Series, Liu pitched a shutout inning with 2 strikeouts against the Brothers his first outing, but he allowed a run in a inning in Game 3 due to Tzu-Hao Chen's solo shot. The Brothers swept the Lions.
Liu was still solid in 2022, and he notched 11 holds with a 3.02 ERA in 47 games. He improved in 2023, and he broke the CPBL record for a 30-game streak without allowing a run (the old mark of 26 had been shared by Hung-Cheng Lai and Miguel Mejia). He ended up collecting 16 holds with a 1.94 ERA in 48 appearances and ranked 6th in holds (10 behind Chun-Wei Wu). In the 2023 CPBL Playoff Series, Liu pitched 1/3 of a inning in Game 1 against the Rakuten Monkeys, then he allowed a run in a inning in Game 3 while walked 2. The Monkeys eliminated the Lions in 3 games.
Liu's repertoire features a fastball that peaks at 93.2 mph, a changeup and slider.
