Biographical Information[edit]
Tzu-Chien Shih has pitched in the Chinese Professional Baseball League.
Shih played for Taiwan in the 2016 U-23 Baseball World Cup and 2017 summer Universiade. He was taken by the Uni-President Lions in the 3rd round of the 2017 CPBL Draft. He was 1-1 with a 4.12 ERA in five games for the 2017 Lions. Shih improved to 11-5, 3.86 in 2018. He was 4th in the league in wins (between Josh Roenicke and Mike Loree), leading Taiwanese natives, and would have been 7th in ERA had he qualified. Shih also attended the 2018 CPBL All-Star Game, and he pitched 1 inning with a run allowed. He pitched 3 shutout innings to beat Zeke Spruill and the Lamigo Monkeys in the 2018 Taiwan Series to tie the Series at Game 3 but the Lions dropped the last two. He won Rookie of the Year for his work.
However, he couldn't extend his performance in 2019. Shih's ERA rose to 6.42, and he only had a 6-8 record. He was still selected into the 2019 CPBL All-Star Game, and he notched a hold with 2 shutout innings. Shih struggled in 2020 as he was 8-8 with a 6.92 ERA, and he broke the CPBL record with 25 homers allowed. Thus, he mainly stayed in the minor league in 2021. He pitched 2 shutout inning in 2021 Taiwan Series Game 3, but the Lions were swept by the CTBC Brothers. Shih only had 6 relief outings in 2021. As a reliever, Shih pitched 25 games in 2022, and his ERA was 6.44. He finally bounced back in 2023, having a 4.41 ERA in 32 appearances. He also attended the 2023 CPBL All-Star Game, and he notched another hold with a shutout inning. The TSG Hawks then selected him in the expansion draft.
Shih's repertoire included a fastball (peak 91.9 mph), slider and changeup.
