Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Jose Valdez was signed by the Detroit Tigers as an amateur free agent in 2009. The scouts were Carlos Santana, Ramon Perez and Miguel Garcia. He spent his first three seasons with the DSL Tigers before moving to the United States with the GCL Tigers in 2012.

Valdez never started a game as a professional, and never picked up more than four wins in one season, before his major league debut with the Tigers on July 31, 2015, although he did save plenty of games (92), including a personal best of 33 between two teams in 2013. He had led the 2012 Gulf Coast League with 15 saves. In 2013, he had tied R.J. Hively, Scott Oberg, Victor Moreno and Chris Hatcher for second in the minor leagues in saves, behind only Jeff Walters.

Facing the Baltimore Orioles, he entered the game in the 6th inning with his team holding a 6-5 lead and a runner on first base with nobody out, but he failed to retire anyone as he allowed a home run to the first batter he faced, Manny Machado, followed by a walk and a pair of singles before Neftali Feliz replaced him. He allowed 2 runs and was charged with the 8-7 loss, leaving the game with an infinite ERA.
