Biographical Information[edit]
Relief pitcher Jeff Walters has played in the New York Mets minor league system from 2010 to 2016.
He was drafted numerous times before finally inking a professional contract. Initially, Walters was taken by the San Francisco Giants in the 24th round of the 2005 amateur draft out of high school. He was then drafted by the Washington Nationals in the 47th round of the 2007 amateur draft - a couple picks ahead of Logan Schafer - out of St. Petersburg College. In 2008, the Cleveland Indians drafted him in the 30th round out of St. Petersburg and in 2009, the Baltimore Orioles took him in the 17th round. He finally signed after the Mets took him in the 7th round of the 2010 amateur draft out of the University of Georgia, to where he had transferred. He signed for a $50,000 bonus.
He pitched for the Kingsport Mets in 2010 and went 0-2 with an 8.10 ERA in 3 games (2 starts). With the Brooklyn Cyclones in 2011, Walters was 4-6 with a 3.32 ERA in 14 starts and in 2012, after converting to relief pitching, he was 4-5 with 4 saves and a 2.30 ERA in 36 relief appearances for the Savannah Sand Gnats (17 G, 0.95 ERA, 4 Sv.) and St. Lucie Mets (19 G, 3.76 ERA). In 2013, he was 4-3 with 52 games finished, 38 saves and a 2.09 ERA in 53 appearances, striking out 60 batters in 56 innings of work, for the Binghamton Mets. He was an Eastern League Mid-Season and Post-Season All-Star that year. He had an 8.86 ERA in 23 appearances for the Triple A Las Vegas 51s in 2014 and though he rebounded to a 2.45 mark in 29 games in 2015, that was between three low to mid-level clubs. He had a 5.89 mark at Triple A in 2016 and was granted free agency following the season. The Tampa Bay Rays signed and released him before the start of the 2017 campaign; he began the year in the independent ranks. He went 2-3 with a 3.00 ERA in 26 games (4 starts) for the Kansas City T-Bones.
