Biographical Information[edit]

Si-hwan Roh has played in the KBO.

Roh played for South Korea in the 2018 U-18 Asian Championship, then was taken by the Hanwha Hawks in the first round of the second phase in the 2017 KBO draft. [1] He struggled in his rookie year, only hitting .186/.241/.260 with one homer in 91 games. Roh improved to .220/.298/.387 with 12 homers in 2020, and became the first player who was born after 2000 to blast 10 homers in a season. The young slugger hit .271/.387/.466 in 2021, but slumped to .281/.355/.383 with 6 homers in 2022.

The Ulsan native broke out and became one of the most outstanding sluggers in the KBO in 2023. He was selected into the 2023 KBO All-Star Game, but only went 0-for-4, with a strikeout against Won-jung Kim. He ended hitting .298/.388/.541 with 31 homers, and became the first player born after 2000 to hit 30 homers in a season. He led the league in homers, OPS+ and RBI despite missing nearly a month due to 2023 Asian Games; heranked 8th in hits (34 behind Ah-seop Son), 8th in doubles (7 behind Ja-wook Koo), 2nd in slugging (.007 behind Jeong Choi) and 7th in runs scored (24 behind Chang-ki Hong).

Roh represented Korea in two important events - 2022 Asian Games (held in '23 due to delays from COVID-19) and 2023 Asia Professional Baseball Championship - in this year. In the Asian Games, he debuted against Hong Kong and hit a RBI single off Alexander Cheuk-Hei Chan in the 8th inning while drawing three walks. He then went 1-for-3 with a walk against Chinese Taipei, and was 2-for-2 with 2 RBI against Thailand. Roh drove in both runs for Korea versus Japan - a sacrifice fly against Shuichiro Kayo and a RBI single against Katsutoshi Satake to help them advance to the Gold Medal Game. He then went 2-for-3 with a RBI sacrifice fly against Ningji Li of China. In the Gold Medal Game, he was 0-for-3 with a walk against Chih-Jung Liu; South Korea beat Chinese Taipei and won the Gold, earning him exemption from military service. He handled 5 chances error-free at third, led the event in RBI with 6 (tied with YongKang Kou, Dong-hee Yoon and Bo-Gyeong Moon), ranked 8th in hits (3 behind Ji-hoon Choi) and 5th in doubles (2 behind Yoon). [2] In the Asia Professional Baseball Championship, Roh was 3-for-5 with a clutch walk-off RBI single against Daniel McGrath of Australia in the opener, then went 1-for-4 with a single against Chihiro Sumida of Japan. He was 1-for-4 with a RBI single against Chinese Taipei's Yen-Cheng Wang and helped them advance to Gold Medal Game, then was 2-for-5, with a two-run double against Tatsuya Imai in the Gold Medal Game. The South Korean squad was beaten by Japan due to Makoto Kadowaki's walk-off single. He was also named as the first baseman on the All-Tournament Team. [3]
