Son was drafted by the Lotte Giants in the fourth round of the 2007 KBO draft. He debuted in 2007, and he was 1-for-6 with the big club. He hit .303/.387/.404 as a part-timer in 2008 but slumped to .186/.263/.337 in 34 games in 2009. The Busan native batted .306/.377/.438 as a starter in 2010. He finished 12th in average (between Jung-kwon Park and Keun-woo Jeong) and 5th in runs (85). In 2011, he was even better at .326/.385/.507 with 15 homers. He finished among the league leaders in average (5th, between Yong-kyu Lee and Chi-hong An), runs (5th, 79, between Hyung-woo Choi and Han-lee Park), RBI (6th, between Jin-haeng Choi and Bum-ho Lee), hits (7th, between Hyun-soo Kim and Sung-heon Hong), doubles (25, tied for 5th with Hyun-soo Kim, Jung Choi and Min-ho Kang) and triples (5, tied for 3rd with Jong-wook Lee, Dae-hyung Lee and Jun-woo Jeon). He won a Gold Glove, which in Korea goes for overall play, not just defense; he was named as the top right fielder, joining Yong-kyu Lee (CF) and Hyung-woo Choi (LF) as the outfielders picked.
In 2012, Son hit .314/.370/.396 and led the league with 158 hits. He was selected into the KBO All-Star Game for the first time in his career, and he also won the Gold Glove again. Son was 3rd in batting, between Jung-Ho Kang and Sok-min Park. He then represented Korea in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, hitting .250/.400/.250 and his nation was eliminated in the first round. He was still a hitting machine in KBO, hitting .345/.421/.474 and led the league in hits again in 2013. Son was 2nd in batting (.003 behind Byung-kyu Lee), 2nd in steals (36, 14 behind Jong-ho Kim), 2nd in runs (8 behind Byung-ho Park) and 5th in OBP (between Sok-min Park and Seong-hoon Jeong). He also won his third straight Gold Glove as an outfielder.
On June 20, 2024, Sun collected his 2,505 career hit, and he passed Yong-taik Park to become the KBO all-time hits leader.
