Biographical Information

Pitcher Ryan Sherriff began his professional career in 2010. He reached Triple-A for the first time in 2014 and the majors in 2017.

He was originally drafted by the Washington Nationals in the 33rd round of the 2010 amateur draft, one round after Randolph Oduber, but he opted not to sign. He was then taken by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 28th round of the 2011 amateur draft and inked a contract. He spent that summer with the 2011 Johnson City Cardinals (2-2, 4.54 in 9 G) and Batavia Muckdogs (1-1, 2.70 in 3 G). In 2012, he was 10-3 with a 3.25 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in 16 starts for the Palm Beach Cardinals, tying Jesse Biddle and Pat Dean for 5th in the Florida State League in wins. He tied Dail Villanueva for 4th in the Cards chain in victories.

Sherriff split 2013 between Palm Beach (4-4, 2.31 in 13 G) and the Springfield Cardinals (2-1, 3.33 in 5 G), walking only 22 in 105 innings. In 2014, he moved to the bullpen with Springfield (2-7, 2 Sv, 2.64 in 40 G) and the Memphis Redbirds (3 R, 9 H in 4 IP). He tied Eric Fornataro and Christopher Thomas for 9th in the St. Louis system with 44 pitching appearances. In 2015, he was again with Springfield (1-1, 3.15 in 27 G) and Memphis (1.69 in 3 G).

In 2016, he went 7-1 with 3 saves and a 2.84 ERA in 49 games for the Triple-A Redbirds. He tied Steven De La Cruz and Kevin Herget for second in the Cardinals' system in games pitched, four shy of Corey Littrell. He was on the PCL team for the 2016 AAA All-Star Game. He relieved Andrew Edwards in the bottom of the 8th with a 3-2 deficit and got Ronnier Mustelier on a grounder, then was relieved by Armando Rivero.

The Californian was on the Israeli national team in the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers. In their opener, he relieved Craig Breslow with a 5-2 lead over the Great Britain national team, two on and two outs. He retired Champ Stuart on a grounder then turned the ball over to closer Brad Goldberg for the 9th. In the next game, he again entered with two outs and two on in the bottom of the 8th, this time relieving Jeremy Bleich to try to protect a 1-0 lead over Brazil. He again got a crucial out, this time getting Reinaldo Sato to hit into a force, then Goldberg again closed it out.

He was part of Israel's designated pitcher pool for the 2017 World Baseball Classic itself but was not activated. He opened 2017 well for Memphis (5-1, 6 Sv, 3.19 in 48 G, .99 WHIP) and was called up to the majors in late August when Trevor Rosenthal went on the DL. In his big league debut on August 25th, he entered in the 5th inning with a 5-3 deficit against the Tampa Bay Rays, replacing Zach Duke, who had left for a pinch-hitter. He walked the first batter he faced, Danny Espinosa, on eight pitches, but fanned Cesar Puello and got Kevin Kiermaier and Steven Souza on grounders to end the inning. He went 1-2-3 in the 6th, striking out Logan Morrison in the process, and allowed two hits in the 7th but added two more strikeouts. With the game still 5-3, he was lifted for PH Tommy Pham.
