Biographical Information[edit]

Paul Waterman pitched for the Great Britain national team in the 2007 European Championship, giving up 3 runs in one inning of work. In 2008, Waterman pitched for the Mannheim Tornados in Germany's Bundesliga, going 4-0 with a 1.91 ERA. He went 3-2 with a 3.93 ERA in the postseason, losing games one and three of the finals to the Buchbinder Legionäre's Philipp Hoffschild; fellow British teammate Craig Pycock replaced Waterman as the starter in game five to try win it all, but he also fell to Hoffschild.

In 2009, Waterman was 2-7 with a 5.20 ERA for the Gauting Indians. He tied Gregor Klinc for the most losses in the circuit and led in hit batsmen (12). Back with Britain for the 2009 Baseball World Cup, he allowed 7 runs (6 earned) in 7 innings over four games. He moved to Sweden's Karlskoga Bats in 2011 and went 9-3 with a 2.47 ERA, 102 K in 98 1/3 IP and .218 opponent average; he hit .303/.403/.393 with 25 RBI. He was second in Elitserien in ERA (.92 behind Joakim Claesson) and strikeouts (3 behind Claesson), led in opponent average (.006 better than Claesson) and tied Jakob Claesson for the most wins.

He took Britain's lone loss in the 2011 European Championship Qualifiers, falling to Shlomo Lipetz and Israel. He allowed two hits, three walks and four runs (three earned) in 4 1/3 IP. He had a 10-1, 1.69 record for Karlskoga in 2012, allowing a .186 average. He hit only .189/.286/.215. He led in wins (two over Richard Leander), ERA (.10 over Spencer Kreisberg) and average allowed (.010 ahead of Leander). He was third in whiffs behind Joakim Claesson and A.J. Comaskey.

Waterman led Britain's qualifiers in ERA in the 2012 European Championship (2.61 ERA in three no-decisions in relief; 1 BB, 8 K in 10 1/3 IP). He fared poorly in the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers with a 54.00 ERA; he still was not Great Britain's worst hurler (Estevenson Encarnacion and Kyle Wilson had higher ERAs). In his first outing, he relieved Greg Hendrix in the bottom of the 7th with the bases loaded and a 5-1 deficit against Team Canada. He allowed a bases-clearing double to Skyler Stromsmoe. Jonathan Malo hit into an error by Albert Cartwright. Waterman threw a wild pitch, then Tyson Gillies tripled to end it in a mercy rule decision. In his other game, he relieved Jake Esch with a 10-2 lead over the Czech Republic national team in the bottom of the 7th. He walked Pavel Budský and Jan Drábek singled. Martin Schneider hit into a force. Martin Drong hit into a run-scoring error by Richard Klijn, then Jakub Hajtmar singled to load the bases. Josh Mason relieved and allowed a run to score.

Paul was 3-1 with a 3.19 ERA for Karlskoga in 2013 and hit .270/.413/.351. He remained with the team in 2014.
