Philipp Hoffschild is a top German reliever.

Hoffschild debuted in Bundesliga in 2004 with the Regensburg Legionäre, going 3-1 with 2 saves and a 2.02 ERA and outperforming Rodney Gessmann, a future minor leaguer and fellow young prospect. In 2005, the right-hander allowed 36 hits in 27 1/3 IP and had a 4.94 ERA but was 1-1 with 7 saves, leading the southern Bundesliga in the latter category. He had a 3.37 ERA in the 2005 European Championship in his first appearance with the German national team.

In 2006, the Regensburg right-hander allowed 17 hits in 26 1/3 IP while fanning 31. He had a 5-0, 4 save, 0.68 record, again doing better than Gessmann. He led the south in saves and tied for 8th in victories. The next year, Hoffschild gave up only 21 hits in 32 innings while striking out 33. He won 3, lost 2 and saved 4 while posting a miniscule ERA of 1.13; he again had the most saves in the southern division.

Hoffschild tossed 3 shutout innings in the 2007 European Championship but struggled in the 2007 Baseball World Cup, giving up 5 hits and 2 runs in 1 2/3 IP. In the 2008 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament, he pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing one hit and no runs.

Philipp allowed one run in 9 innings in the 2008 European Cup in Grosseto. After future minor leaguer Mike Bolsenbroek allowed 3 runs in the first against the Templiers de Sénart, Hoffschild entered and threw 8 scoreless to earn the win.

Hoffschild had another fine season in the Bundesliga in 2008. In 42 1/3 innings, he gave up 25 hits and struck out 46. His 0.85 ERA led the South by 0.09 over Eddie Aucoin. He tied for 7th in wins, tied for first in saves and was second to Aucoin in WHIP. Despite getting just one start in the 2008 regular season, he got a crucial playoff start against the Solingen Alligators, 27-1 during the regular season. Hoffschild was excellent, allowing only 3 hits in shutting out Solingen and beating Enorbel Márquez.
