Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Patrick Schuster made his major league debut in 2016.

He was a huge star in high school, at J.W. Mitchell High School in New Port Richey, FL, where he once threw four consecutive no-hitters to draw national attention. He was named first-team high school All-American by Baseball America, joining David Holmberg, Keyvius Sampson, Jacob Turner and Zack Wheeler as the pitchers. The Arizona Diamondbacks took him in the 13th round of the 2009 amateur draft, one round after Charles Brewer; the scout was Luke Wrenn. He signed for a $450,000 bonus, turning down a University of Florida scholarship; the bonus was more in line with what third-round picks receive.

He made his pro debut with the Missoula Osprey, allowing two runs in five innings in 2009. In 2010, he was 5-4 with a 3.76 ERA for Missoula, but walked 34 in 76 2/3 IP. He tied for 9th in the Pioneer League in wins and was third in ERA behind Albert Campos and Red Patterson. Moving up to the South Bend Silver Hawks in 2011, he went 7-4 with a 3.33 ERA. With the 2012 Visalia Rawhide, he struggled in relief (4-5, 1 Sv, 4.90), though he did fan 67 in 64 1/3 IP. He also walked 32 and hit 10. He was 5th in the California League in hit batsmen. He improved his second stint with Visalia (0-1, 1.83 in 55 G), looking like a promising LOOGY. He tied Nelson Gonzalez and Seth Simmons for 4th in the Cal League in pitching appearances, with the lowest ERA of any of the top 25 in that department. Among Diamondback farmhands, he tied Simmons and RJ Hively for first in games pitched.

On December 12, 2013, Schuster was chosen first overall in the 2013 Rule V Draft, by the Houston Astros. They then immediately traded him to the San Diego Padres, to complete a trade made a day earlier for reliever Anthony Bass. San Diego decided not to retain him and placed him on waivers. The Kansas City Royals claimed him but also did not keep him and he wound up back with Arizona as a result. He split the summer between the Mobile BayBears (3-2, 2.02 in 36 G) and Reno Aces (4.50 ERA in 21 G). He was second in the Diamondbacks chain in games pitched, one behind Daniel Gibson.

Schuster began 2015 back with Mobile and was 0-1 with a 3.24 ERA in 22 games. The Diamondbacks then sold him to the Cincinnati Reds. He finished the year with the Pensacola Pelicans, going 2-1 with a 3.41 ERA in 30 games. A free agent, he was signed by the Oakland A's. He kicked off 2016 with the Nashville Sounds, where he was 1-0 with five saves and a 1.30 ERA. The A's called him up to the majors.

In his MLB debut for the A's on July 5, 2016, he relieved Andrew Triggs with a 7-1 deficit and two outs in the bottom of the 7th against the Minnesota Twins. He fanned Max Kepler on three pitches. After the A's closed it to 7-4 in the top of the 8th, he had a rough bottom of the 8th. He retired Danny Santana then allowed a single to Kurt Suzuki. Suzuki advanced on a passed ball and a grounder by Byron Buxton. Eduardo Nunez singled in Suzuki then Robbie Grossman drew a full-count walk. Liam Hendriks relieved and allowed both inherited runners to score, giving Schuster a 27.00 ERA and 3.00 WHIP for his first game in the big leagues.
