Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Red Patterson played the only game of his big league career with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2014.
Patterson was 5-2 with a 2.53 ERA as a high school senior. He was 10-0 with a 1.41 ERA as a sophomore in junior college. He had a 4.96 ERA at the University of Texas-San Antonio in 2009. In 2010, he went to Southwestern Oklahoma State University, striking out 103 in 72 1/3 IP to lead the Lone Star Conference in whiffs. He was drafted by the Dodgers in the 29th round of the 2010 amateur draft, with the signing scout being Calvin Jones, and began his professional career that year.
He was 6-1 with a 3.33 ERA in 14 starts for the Ogden Raptors in his first season, which was good enough to earn him a spot on the Pioneer League All-Star squad, joining Matt Miller, Shawn Tolleson, Albert Campos and Tanner Robles as the pitchers. He was second in ERA (1.28 behind Campos), tied for 4th in wins and tied Robles for 9th in strikeouts (66). In 2011, he was 12-5 with 172 strikeouts and a 3.69 ERA in 28 starts (173 1/3 innings) split between the Great Lakes Loons (5-4, 3.43) and Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (7-1, 3.91). He tied Dana Eveland and Will Savage for the most wins by a Dodger farmhand, led in innings (10 2/3 ahead of Tim Sexton) and easily led in whiffs (37 more than runner-up Allen Webster).
He converted to relief pitching for 2012 and went 7-1 with a 3.07 ERA in 47 appearances for the Chattanooga Lookouts. He was 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA for the Mesa Solar Sox in the Arizona Fall League. In 2013, he was 7-4 with a 3.03 ERA in 39 games (12 starts) for the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes, striking out 109 in 107 IP. He opened 2014 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA for the Isotopes.
Patterson made his major league debut with the Dodgers on May 1, 2014, being called up especially to start the second game of a day/night doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins. His opponent on the mound that day was Kris Johnson, himself called up for the day and making only his second big league start. Red gave up one earned run (2 H, 3 BB, 1 K) in 4 2/3 innings before Brandon League relieved and was not involved in the decision as the game was not decided until the 12th inning. He returned to the minors after that and never appeared in the majors again.
