Biographical Information

Pitcher Allen Webster was a central figure in one of the biggest blockbuster trades in baseball history.

He was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 18th round of the 2008 amateur draft, out of high school. The scout was Lon Joyce. He pitched 12 games in relief for the GCL Dodgers that summer, going 1-1, 3.44 in 18 1/3 innings, with 17 walks. In 2009, he made 11 starts in 16 games between the Ogden Raptors and the GCL Dodgers, with a combined record of 4-1, 2.36. His control sharper, he walked 18 in 69 2/3 innings. He was third in the Arizona League in ERA (2.08, trailing Caleb Thielbar and Cameron Lamb) and tenth in strikeouts (56). He was named the third-best AZL prospect by Baseball America, after Mike Trout and Fabio Martinez and right ahead of Rymer Liriano and Randal Grichuk.

In 2010, he was with the Great Lakes Loons of the Midwest League and went 12-9, 2.88 in 26 games, striking out 114. He was third in the Midwest League in ERA (after Ian Krol and James Gillheeney) and tied for first in wins (with Miguel Munoz, Trevor Feeney and Taylor Stanton). Baseball America listed him as the #11 MWL prospect, between Tyler Skaggs and Jean Segura.

He graduated to AA midway through the 2011 season after having started with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes of the California League (5-2, 2.33, 62 K in 54 IP in a hitter's league). The promotion was to the Chattanooga Lookouts of the Southern League, and while his ERA in AA was 5.04, his overall record of 11-5, 4.03 with 135 strikeouts was quite impressive for a 21-year-old. After the season, Baseball America included him in its top 100 prospect list, at number 95.

Webster started the 2012 season back with Chattanooga, with better results in his second go-round. In 27 games his record was only 6-8, but with a 3.55 ERA and 117 strikeouts in 121 2/3 innings. That's where he was when on August 25th, he was traded to the Boston Red Sox as part of a 9-player deal with also involved the Dodgers taking on $260 million in salary commitments while adding major league veterans Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto. For the Red Sox, apart from the draw of erasing so much salary from the books, the attraction laid in a few prospects that went their way, and Webster was considered the most promising of these, given his young age, excellent stuff, and ability to hold his own in AA already. He finished the year by pitching twice for the AA Portland Sea Dogs, giving up 8 runs in 9 innings.

Webster began the 2013 season with two solid starts for the AAA Pawtucket Red Sox, giving up only one run in 10 innings. He was then called up to Boston and made his debut starting the second game of a doubleheader against the Kansas City Royals on April 21st. He gave up 3 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits in 6 innings, striking out 5, but did not feature in the decision. He made 8 appearances, including 7 starts, going 1-2, 8.60. In 2014, he made 11 starts for Boston, with a record of 5-3, 5.03. For Pawtucket, he went respectively 8-4, 3.60 and 4-4, 3.10 in 21 games each of those years.

On December 12, 2014, Allen was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks with Rubby De La Rosa in return for Wade Miley. He was assigned to the AAA Reno Aces at the start of the 2015 season. He did not pitch particularly well, as his ERA was an even 9.00 after five starts, but he was called up to Arizona on June 13th and did better. Facing the San Francisco Giants, he pitched into the 6th inning and received credit for a 4-2 win; in fact, he did not give up a hit until Joe Panik hit a double with one out in the 6th
