Relief pitcher R.J. Hively began his professional career in 2012.
After high school, Hively went to CSU Fullerton, but red-shirted his freshman year. He then transferred to Santa Ana College, where he played in 2010. He was taken by the New York Yankees in the 26th round of the 2010 amateur draft, but opted not to sign. He then transferred to the University of Mississippi where he played two seasons. He then inked a contract after the Arizona Diamondbacks picked him in the 19th round of the 2012 amateur draft.
With the Yakima Bears in 2012, Hively went 1-0 with a 1.76 ERA in 23 games. In 2013, he was 4-0 with a 1.81 ERA and 33 saves in 55 games (and 68 strikeouts in 59 2/3 innings) between the South Bend Silver Hawks and Visalia Rawhide. He was a Midwest League Mid- and Post-Season All-Star that year. In 2014, he was 3-5 with a 2.76 mark in 55 games for the Mobile BayBears. He pitched for Visalia, Mobile and the Triple-A Reno Aces in 2015, going a combined 5-5 with a 4.69 ERA in 35 games (14 starts); in 96 innings, he allowed 116 hits but had 105 strikeouts. He joined the independent ranks for 2016, going 1-6 with a 6.48 ERA in 49 games (8 starts) between the Bridgeport Bluefish and Lancaster Barnstormers. With Lancaster in 2017, he was 6-0 with a 4.52 ERA in 55 games.
