Biographical Information[edit]

Relief pitcher Andrew Triggs began playing in the Kansas City Royals minor league system in 2012.

He was drafted multiple times. First taken by the Cleveland Indians in the 24th round of the 2010 amateur draft, he opted not to sign. He was then drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 21st round of the 2011 amateur draft, but again did not sign. He finally inked a contract after being taken by Kansas City in the 19th round of the 2012 amateur draft.

His professional career started well, as he went 1-1 with a 1.76 ERA in 22 games between the Idaho Falls Chukars and Kane County Cougars, striking out 51 batters in 46 innings in 2012. He split 2013 between the Wilmington Blue Rocks and Northwest Arkansas Naturals, going 6-3 with 9 saves, 40 games finished and a 2.28 ERA in 43 appearances. He also struck out 73 batters in 67 innings. He began 2014 with the Naturals and made the Texas League Mid-Season All-Star team. He went 4-3, 2.93 in 43 games for Northwest Arkansas, picking up 19 saves and also recorded a save without giving up any runs in his lone appearance for the AAA Omaha Storm Chasers.

Just before the start of the 2015 season, he was purchased by the Baltimore Orioles and assigned to the AA Bowie BaySox, where he pitched 43 times with an 0-2 record but 17 saves and a sparkling 1.03 ERA. The Orioles added him to their 40-man roster after the season, but in spring training, he was victim of a numbers crunch as the Birds signed a couple of major league free agents and needed space on the roster for them. He was therefore placed on waivers on March 10, 2016 and was claimed three days later by the Oakland Athletics. He began the season with the AAA Nashville Sounds, where he made 6 appearances with a 2-1 record and a 5.13 ERA before getting the call to the Show.

Andrew made his major league debut on April 25, 2016 pitching a perfect inning of relief in a 7-3 loss to the Detroit Tigers. His first major league start was on June 18th against Tim Lincecum and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, for whom Lincecum was making his debut after spending his entire career with the San Francisco Giants up to that point. He pitched three innings and faced one batter in the 4th before he was taken out and ended up with a no-decision. He made 6 starts in 24 appearances, ending up with a record of 1-1, 4.31, with 55 strikeouts in 55 1/3 innings. In 2017, he began the season by not allowing an earned run over his first three starts, in 17 2/3 innings, setting an Oakland record for a starting pitcher. He had also won all three games.
