Biographical Information[edit]

Osvaldo Bidò pitched for the Dominican national team before making his big league debut in 2023.

He was signed by Pittsburgh Pirates scout Juan Mercado in March 2017. [1] He was 1-8 with a 5.33 ERA for the DSL Pirates that summer, with nearly as many walks (36) as whiffs (41). He tied Pedro Zorrilla for the Dominican Summer League lead in losses. He made strides the next year, going 4-6 with a 4.18 ERA and only 19 walks in 75 1/3 IP for the West Virginia Black Bears. He tied for second in the New York-Penn League in losses and was second in IP (5 behind Alex Manasa, also the loss leader).

Bidò continued to improve, splitting 2019 between the Greensboro Grasshoppers (11-5, 3.55) and Bradenton Marauders (1-3, 2.25). He tied Joan Adon for second in the South Atlantic League in wins, one behind Roansy Contreras. Among Bucco minor leaguers, he tied Brad Case for 2nd in victories (4 behind James Marvel) and was 10th with 107 K. He missed the 2020 season as the minor leagues were wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic.

2021 was a step back, as he was 4-8 with a 5.09 ERA for the Altoona Curve. He made it to AAA for two games with the Indianapolis Indians, allowing 10 runs (7 earned) in 7 2/3 IP. He also missed time to pitch for the Dominican Republic in the 2020 Final Olympic Qualifier (though it was really 2021; the 2020 Olympic names were retained after a year's delay due to the pandemic). He was one of two Dominican hurlers not to allow a run in the event, alongside Marcos Diplán. Starting against the Netherlands, he had a 1-2-3 first against Jiandido Tromp, former major leaguer Roger Bernadina and Sharlon Schoop. The first hit he allowed was a second-inning double to Juremi Profar and his first K was Denzel Richardson. He allowed two hits, two walks and no runs in four innings, fanning three, before Diplán took over. The Dominicans won the last spot in the 2020 Olympics, where they would get a Bronze; Bidò did not remain with them for Tokyo. [2]

in 2022, he spent his first full year at AAA, going 3-8 with a 4.53 ERA and 122 K in 111 1/3 IP, but walking 64. Only Matt Krook walked more batters in the 2022 IL though Osvaldo was also 7th in K (between Caleb Kilian and Matthew Liberatore). He tied for third in the Pirates chain in losses (two behind Adrian Florencio), issued the most walks (13 more than runner-up Jared Jones) and was third in strikeouts (behind Jones and Luis Ortiz). That winter, he was 0-1 with a 2.53 ERA for the Águilas Cibaeñas. He began 2023 3-4 with a 4.55 ERA for Indianapolis but got called up as Pittsburgh was battling injuries to their rotation (Vince Velasquez and JT Brubaker were both out for long periods) as well as struggles from Roansy Contreras. He made his major league debut as the starting pitcher for the Pirates against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on June 14, 2023. He had a wild 1st inning, alternating singles and strikeouts - Mike Tauchman singled, Nico Hoerner struck out, Seiya Suzuki singled, Ian Happ whiffed, Dansby Swanson singled in a run and Christopher Morel went down on strikes. He allowed only one more hit, walking three and striking out three more, over the next three shutout innings. Contreras took over with a 5-1 lead but could not maintain it as the Pirates lost the game, 10-6.
