Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Jared Jones was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2nd round of the truncated 2020 amateur draft, out of a high school in California. In a year when high school players were at a distinct disadvantage, he had been on scouts' radars for a while, having played for the USA's U15 national team.

Jones spend three seasons in the Pirates minor league system before making his big league debut. In 2021, he went 3-6, 4.64 in 18 games for the Bradenton Marauders of what was then called the Low-A Southeast. In 2022, he was 5-7, 4.62 for the Greensboro Grasshoppers of the South Atlantic League, then in 2023 got off to a hot start for the Altoona Curve of the AA Eastern League, going 1-4, 2.23 in 10 starts, He was promoted to the AAA Indianapolis Indians, where he was 4-5, 4.72 in another 16 games. Overall, he pitched 126 1/3 innings, allowing just 106 hits and striking out 146 opponents.

He came to spring training in 2024 with a chance to make the Pirates' starting rotation and was successful in staking his claim as he got the ball to start the team's third game of the season facing the Miami Marlins on March 30th. It was a successful debut as he struck out 10 batters in 5 2/3 innings, giving up just 3 runs, and he received credit for a 9-3 win. He was the first Pirates pitcher to reach double digits in strikeouts in his debut since Tim Wakefield way back in 1992.
