Biographical Information[edit]

Giddelys Cumaná has pitched for the Venezuelan women's national team.

She debuted in the 2012 Women's Baseball World Cup, going 1-1 with a 6.72 ERA, losing to Australia and Jacinda Barclay then beating Yaima Ramos and Cuba. [1] In the 2014 Women's Baseball World Cup, she walked 10 in 5 2/3 IP against Australia but allowed only four runs in a close loss to Barclay. She lost to Yu-Chen Hsu and Taiwan, walking four and allowing two runs in 1 1/3 IP. She led the event in walks issued, two more than Kit-Ling Yeung and tied Loes Asmus and María Rincón for the most losses. [2]

The right-hander was the first woman to win a Pan American Games baseball contest for Venezuela, defeating Yanet Cruz and Cuba in their third game. In the semifinals against Canadian women's national team (the loser getting Bronze, the winner moving to the Gold Medal Game), she relieved Esquiea Rengel in the 5th with the bases loaded, no outs and a 1-1 tie. Becky Hartley hit the game-winning two-run single off her. Her control was much improved over the prior year, with two walks in eight innings in the 2015 Pan American Games. Only Rengel worked more innings for Venezuela. She was 9th in the women's part of the Games in ERA. [3]

Cumaná beat Yadira Boffill and Cuba in the 2016 Women's Baseball World Cup; only a Libia Duarte single cost her a no-hitter. She then threw a four-hit shutout to beat Hsu and Taiwan in a rematch of two years prior. Venezuela won Bronze; Linibeth Aguilarte got the nod that day for the start. She tied for second in the Cup in wins (one behind Ayami Sato), led in ERA (Marti Sementelli was also at 0.00, in one fewer inning), tied for the most complete games (with Amanda Asay, Sato, Boffill and Chittari Chandu Priya), led in shutouts, tied Rincón for 8th in innings and was third in opponent average (.132) for those with 7+ IP, trailing Claire Eccles and Mirai Araki. Sato was named the tourney's All-Star starting pitcher. [4]

After her dominant 2016, she slipped in the 2018 Women's Baseball World Cup. Having blanked Taiwan in '16, she allowed six runs in 2 1/3 IP in a loss to Chiao-Yun Huang and gave up 11 hits and 6 runs in 6 innings but held on to beat Puerto Rico and Adrix Paradizo. She tied Sato and Hee-jin Kim for 10th in the Cup with 14 hits allowed and her 12 earned runs tied Ching-Wen Hu and Dianelis Porro for fourth. [5]
