Biographical Information

Chiao-Yun Huang has been the top female pitcher in Taiwan.

Huang debuted for the Taiwanese women's national team as a teenager in the 2010 Women's Baseball World Cup. In the 2012 Women's Baseball World Cup, she was roughed up in relief by Canada and got the win over the Netherlands despite a mediocre relief outing. She finished with a 16.50 ERA and .536 opponent average in 4 2/3 IP (15 H, 13 R, 11 ER) and went 1 for 2 as a backup at 1B; Tzu-Ling Wen was the only Taiwanese hurler with a higher ERA. She gave up 6 runs in 2/3 of an inning against Canada in the 2014 Women's Baseball World Cup but recovered with a fine outing against the Netherlands and a win over Australia. She also hit .125/.273/.250 with 3 RBI in 8 at-bats at 1B in the event. On the mound, she finished 1-0 with a 5.07 ERA. She tied Marti Sementelli and Yik-Shan Hung for 5th in the event with 7 strikeouts as a pitcher.

She continued to improve. She allowed one run in 4 1/3 IP in relief against Australia in the 2016 Women's Baseball World Cup, combined with Yu-Chen Hsu on a two-hitter against South Korea and lost a 2-1 duel to Canada's Amanda Asay against the team that had lit her up in 2012 and 2014. In the Bronze Medal Game, she relieved Hsu with a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 7th, the bases loaded and one out against Venezuela and got one out but allowed the game-losing hit to Osmari Garcia. She finished at 1-0 with a 1.08 ERA; among pitchers to allow an earned run, only Asay had a better ERA. She was also 6th in IP (13), tied Milanyela Cortez for 9th in strikeouts (9) and was 0 for 3 with a sacrifice fly as a backup at 1B. She was named the event's All-Star relief pitcher.

The lefty was named MVP of Taiwan's women's national championship in both 2016 and 2017. In the 2017 Women's Baseball Asian Cup, she scored Taiwan's only run in a loss to Japan, teamed with Min-Hua Chen on a perfect game against South Korea and finished up with a near-perfect game against India with Yu-Ying Hsieh (India had gotten a hit in the first off Hsieh). She hit .333/.375/.500 with 4 RBI in 5 games for the event and was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and .063 opponent average. She tied Mayu Himeno for the best ERA and allowed the lowest average (Tak-Kwan Fan was next at .154). Himeno beat her out as the All-Star pitcher. She repeated as MVP of Taiwan's women's national championship in 2018.

In the 2018 Women's Baseball World Cup, she got her revenge against Venezuela, scattering nine hits in six and allowing only one run to beat Giddelys Cumana. She drove in 3 against South Korea then beat former champion Team USA with a 4-3 complete game. Against Canada, she surrendered four in the first but settled down with six shutout innings after that as Taiwan rallied to win. Finally, in the Gold Medal Game, she finally struggled, relieving Ching-Wen Hu in the 4th and allowing 3 runs (2 earned) in 1/3 IP before Chiao-Chi Lai relieved. She was named the tournament's All-Star starting pitcher, beating out Japanese ace Ayami Sato, the tourney MVP. She finished 3-0 with a 3.10 ERA (3-0, 1.00 before the Gold Medal Game) and was 2 for 2 with 3 RBI and a double on offense. She tied Sato for the most wins in the Cup, tied for 5th in games pitched, tied Hu for the most starts (3) and tied for first in complete games with Asay, Stacy Piagno and Hung).
