Biographical Information[edit]
Johan Mieses has won a minor league home run title and been on the Dominican national team.
Mieses was originally signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He hit .222/.323/.259 for the 2013 DSL Dodgers then improved to .299/.371/.505 the next year with 29 steals in 32 tries; he also had 11 outfield assists. Despite playing in a short-season league, he was third in the Dodgers chain in swipes (behind Malcolm Holland and Joc Pederson) and tied Mike Baxter for 6th in triples (8). He tied for 9th in the Dominican Summer League in triples and tied for 8th in stolen bases.
He came stateside in 2015, splitting time between the Great Lakes Loons (.277/.320/.440 in 45 G) and Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (.245/.299/.439 in 51 G). He produced at a .247/.314/.510 with 28 homers, 31 doubles, 72 runs and 78 RBI for the 2016 Quakes, while registering 14 assists. In the Dodgers chain, he tied Micah Johnson for 6th in runs, was 3rd in doubles (after Kyle Garlick and Omar Estévez), led in homers (one ahead of Willie Calhoun and Edwin Rios) and 3rd in RBI (after Calhoun and Matt Beaty). In the California League, he tied Joe Bennie for 6th in doubles, led in homers (3 ahead of Travis Demeritte), tied Jay Baum and Jairo Beras for 7th in RBI and was 3rd with 235 total bases (behind Luke Tendler and Scott Heineman). He was named the Cal League All-Star DH. [1]
The slugger split 2017 between Rancho Cucamonga (.353/.411/.717, 25 R, 27 RBI, 8 HR in 28 G) and the Tulsa Drillers (.160/.246/.347, 16 HR in 90 G), struggling to make contact in AA. He tied Rios and O'Koyea Dickson for 3rd in the Dodgers system in dingers but was also 4th with 154 strikeouts. He was then traded the the St. Louis Cardinals for Breyvic Valera. [2] In 2018, he played for the Palm Beach Cardinals (.251/.311/.424 in 65 G) and the Springfield Cardinals (.205/.250/.374 in 57 G). He hit 19 homers, 5th on the Cards farm (between Andrew Young and Victor Roache).
In 2019, he was with Springfield (.213/.301/.395 in 96 G) and the Memphis Redbirds (.339/.414/.677 in 22 G), bopping 22 home runs. He was third in the St. Louis farm system in homers, behind Adolis García and Dylan Carlson. For the 2019-2020 Toros del Este, he was 0 for 3. He did not play in the summer of 2020 as the season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic. He was 2 for 9 with a double and home run for the 2020-2021 Toros.
Moving to the Boston Red Sox as a free agent, he started on a tear (14 HR in 34 G). That earned him a spot on the Dominican squad for the 2020 Final Olympic Qualifier, replacing six-time All-Star José Bautista, who had been with them for the 2020 Americas Olympic Qualifier (the events were in 2021, but labeled as 2020 as the Tokyo Olympics were still going under the 2020 moniker). He hit 5th and played left field in their opener. He struck out his first at-bat, against the Venezuelan national team's Erick Leal but doubled his next time up and later adding a two-run shot off Luís Madero. The next game, he broke a scoreless tie with the Dutch national team in the bottom of the 6th with a two-run bomb against Tom de Blok. He finished the event 4-for-12. He tied Alexi Amarista, Diego Goris and Hernán Pérez for the event lead in home runs and tied Alexander Palma for 4th with 11 total bases. Only Goris and Amarista had higher slugging percentages. He helped the Dominicans win a spot in the 2020 Olympics. [3]
