Biographical Information

Second baseman Breyvic Valera began his professional career as an 18-year-old in 2010 after the St. Louis Cardinals signed him as an amateur free agent.

He began his career with a .325/.402/.472 line with 10 stolen bases and only 15 strikeouts in 60 games for the VSL Cardinals. The next year, 2011, he hit .311/.368/.410 with 14 steals and 26 strikeouts in 47 games between the GCL Cardinals and Johnson City Cardinals. In 2012, he hit .314/.356/.415 with 10 stolen bases and 27 strikeouts in 72 games between the Batavia Muckdogs and Springfield Cardinals, earning a spot on the New York-Penn League Mid-Season All-Star squad, and in 2013, he hit .309/.358/.367 with 13 stolen bases and 30 strikeouts in 128 games for the Peoria Chiefs, earning a spot on the Midwest League All-Star team. In 2014, he hit .313/.361/.367 with 17 steals and 35 strikeouts in 132 games between the Palm Beach Cardinals and Springfield Cardinals. He was a Florida State League Mid-Season All-Star that year.

He was named MVP of the Venezuelan League in 2016-17. Playing for the Bravos de Margarita, he hit .356 in 61 games, with 7 homers and 28 RBIs.

He made his major league debut for the Cards at the end of the 2017 season, going 1 for 10 in 5 games. He had spent the year in AAA with the Memphis Redbirds, hitting .314 with 8 homers and 41 RBIs in 117 games, also scoring 68 runs. On April 1, 2018, he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in return for minor league OF Johan Mieses. He hit .284 in 56 games for the AAA Oklahoma City Dodgers and was also up with the Dodgers for a spell, hitting .172 in 20 games, filling in as a back-up infielder when the team was devastated by injuries. On July 18th, he was one of five prospects - but the only one with major league experience - to be traded to the Baltimore Orioles when the Dodgers acquired All-Star SS Manny Machado in a blockbuster traded the day after the 2018 All-Star Game. He played just 12 games for Baltimore, however, going 10 for 35 (.286). On January 5, 2019, he was traded again, this time to the San Francisco Giants in return for cash considerations.
