Evan Scribner came to the majors in 2011.
Scribner set his school's career records for both wins (23) and saves (14). As a freshman, he had gone 4-3 with 3 saves and a 4.72 ERA, tying for the Northeast Conference lead in appearances (24). He improved to 6-3, 2.79 as a sophomore with 8 walks in 58 innings, placing 5th in the NEC in ERA. His junior year, he was 7-4 with a 3.25 ERA, ranking 4th in ERA. He was named the All-Conference RHP but lost Pitcher of the Year honors to Dustin Pease. As a senior, he had a 6-6, 2.78 record. His 84 strikeouts tied Brad Brach for the NEC lead.
The Arizona Diamondbacks took him in the 28th round of the 2007 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Matt Merullo and made his pro debut that summer. He split 2007 between the Missoula Osprey (0-1, 2 Sv, 2.92, 48 K in 37 IP) and South Bend Silver Hawks (1-0, 2.61, 13 K in 10 1/3 IP). He opened 2008 with South Bend (2-3, 8 Sv, 1.57, 52 K, 8 BB, 23 H in 34 1/3 IP) and the Visalia Oaks (0-1, Sv, 1.86, 10 K in 9 2/3 IP). He was then traded to the San Diego Padres for Tony Clark. Following the deal, he ended the year with the Lake Elsinore Storm (2-1, Sv, 14 H, 3 BB, 31 K in 23 1/3 IP).
In 2009, Scribner was 8-4 with 21 saves and a 3.07 ERA for the San Antonio Missions, whiffing 77 in 70 1/3 IP. He was second in the Texas League with 58 games pitched (behind Brandon Gomes) and was second in saves (one behind leader Francisco Samuel. Returning to San Antonio the next year, he was 4-5 with 16 saves (in 17 tries) and a 2.59 ERA. He had a WHIP of 1.00 and fanned 81 in 66 innings. He led in appearances (57) and was one save behind co-leaders Adam Reifer and Craig Italiano. He began 2011 with the Tucson Padres and was 0-1 with 3 saves and a 5.62 ERA after six games. He was then called up to the majors to replace Wade LeBlanc on the Padres staff. He was the third Central Connecticut State alumnus to make the big leagues, following Skip Jutze (1972) and Ricky Bottalico (1994).
In his major league debut on April 26, Padres, Evan replaced Aaron Harang in the 7th on a double switch with Orlando Hudson and Eric Patterson; he inherited an 8-1 deficit. He gave up a Jason Heyward single on his first pitch, but Chipper Jones hit into a double play. Dan Uggla singled, then Freddie Freeman grounded out. In the 8th, he walked Adrian Gonzalez but retired Nate McLouth, David Ross and Jair Jurrjens. Rob Johnson pinch-hit for Scribner in the bottom of the 8th.
His brother, Troy Scribner, reached the majors in 2017.
