The Elmira Pioneers were long-time members of the both the Eastern League and New York-Penn League.Throughout their affiliation with the Boston Red Sox in the 1970s, the team was also called the Elmira Red Sox and Elmira Pioneer-Red Sox both formally and informally.

In 1996 the team moved to Lowell, MA and were renamed the Lowell Spinners. Despite losing affiliated baseball a new Pioneers team sprang up in the independent Northeast League where they played until 2006, when ownership decided to go the summer collegiate route and the Pioneers joined the New York Collegiate Baseball League.
